Creating A Great Body For A Research Paper In The APA Format

Learning a new format can be tricky. It's important to learn everything you can about the new format because even the slightest difference can change the look of your paper. If it isn't in the correct style then your grade can be marked down.

The APA style is specifically used for social sciences. Rather than give you an entire outline of the paper, we're just going to focus on the body of it, which can be less complicated to write than other parts.

If you're going to cite a source within the text then you must state the author's last name and the year of publication. If you're going to use quotations then you must also include a page number.

You are free to use an author's ideas in your own words (we call this paraphrasing) but you need to avoid plagiarism. If you want to quote an author or other person directly, use the correct format of citation.

Using a quote or one specific sentence in your text usually means that you can cite your source in the beginning, but if you're going to use an entire paragraph of information (or quotations) by an author, then you can state your source at the end of it.

The main body of an APA research paper includes an introduction, main body paragraphs and then a conclusion. The main body usually starts on the third. Depending on your topic, other sections besides the three listed above may be required.

For instance, if you require a section for experiments and your methods, then you may place this after your introduction, somewhere in the body but before the conclusion. There may also be a discussion section, which should replace the conclusion.

Each section should be titled (except for the introduction). For methods, results or discussion, you must centre the title and bold it. Each subject will have different requirements, so you have to follow the guidelines. Your professor should have these outlined for you.

The best thing to do when preparing to write your masterpiece is to do as much research as you can, and keep a complete record of your references. If you have a good piece of information but failed to write down the author and the title of the work, the information is useless! You have to cite your sources to be able to use them.
